6 Alternatives to Flowers for Decorating Your Wedding Venue

When Kate Middleton walked down the aisle lined with lush trees, brides-to-be around the world were reminded that while flowers are the obvious choice when it comes to decorating your wedding venue, it’s not the only choice they have. Here are a few alternatives to consider:

Strings of lights. Think of how magical it makes you feel to see Christmas lights twinkling. Who ever said that it’s solely for the holidays? Choose a mix of white and yellow, to create a soft glow as you walk down the aisle. This alternative is best down in an enclosed room, like a church or a place of worship, for its full effect to be appreciated.

Candles. Extend the romance of a candlelit dinner to your wedding day. If you have a flair for the dramatic, candelabras with long candles with flickering flames will give your wedding an instant old-world feel. It’s best to keep the candles away from the reach of your guests, to avoid any accidents.

Lanterns. Perhaps a safer alternative to using candles would be lanterns. These come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, with one that would perhaps match your wedding theme. Colorful paper lanterns lend a whimsical, light feel, while standalone glass lanterns or tall lamps feel more royal.

Lush greens. You can opt to go the Kate Middleton route and decorate the venue with beautifully tall trees, or you can also create bushes, potted plants, or garlands of evergreens. It lends a rustic, more laidback vibe to your wedding—plus points if rather than scattering rose petals on the aisles, you lay out grass, bringing the outdoors to your indoor venue.

Water fountains. There’s something grandiose about having water fountains, especially when found indoors. The sound of water also has a calming effect on most people. Create an instant courtyard-like feel by placing a water fountain in the middle of the venue, or scatter a few pieces around the venue, include a few benches around it—instant photo op!

Balloons. Nothing seems to scream “party!” more than balloons! Best kept for the reception venue, having a lot of balloons on the floor may not be too elegant, but it’s the perfect decoration for the couple whose childlike ways are still much there, and just wants to let loose and have a fun time!
